Some, like the akoya, are cultivated in salt water, but there are also freshwater cultured varieties. While pearls are often chosen for their uniform round shape, the baroque pearl is a different story.
| Baroque Pearls Tips The process of cultivating pearls requires that a nucleus be inserted into the mollusk. The salt water variety is often nucleated with a round bead, while freshwaters are nucleated with mantle tissue, creating a less uniform shaped pearl. In fact, what you often get with a freshwater is a non-round, non-uniform shape, whether oval, teardrop or almost marquis shaped. However, allowing a salt water oyster to culture for a longer period of time will often result in pearl jewelry. Thus, the most famous and valuable of the baroque varieties are the south sea and the tahitians.
